On April 11, U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, following a ruling from SCOTUS that the Trump administration must take steps to return Kilmar Armando Abrega Garcia from a prison in El Salvador, ordered the government to share information daily about steps it is taking to return Mr. Garcia.
They have not. Instead, they have stonewalled the courts, refusing to provide any information or plan for the return of a man who was wrongly deported to CECOT, the El Salvadoran gulag.
This administration’s disrespect for the rule of law should not be tolerated.
It’s time to hold the attorneys in contempt for failure to comply with a lawfully executed and SCOTUS-approved order. Lock them up until Mr. Garcia is safely returned alive to the United States. Force the administration to find new attorneys to represent their case, knowing that every day they delay, more attorneys will find themselves behind bars. Eventually, when nobody will represent the administration, hold the executives in contempt and lock them up too.
Fine the members of administration a painful amount, perhaps 100 million daily per person, until Mr. Garcia is safely returned. Use this money to support Mr. Garcia’s family until he is returned. Do not allow them to use taxpayer money to pay the fine. If they’re billionaires, they can afford it. Or they can comply. Simple as that.
Should Mr. Garcia be found to be unalive, the sentences of any administration official or attorney imprisoned under this contempt charge should not change. The daily fine should remain in effect. That is, they shall stay imprisoned and pay the fine for every day that Mr. Garcia has been denied life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the United States.
The longer this criminality goes unchecked, the closer America pushes towards civil war and anarchy. The time to act is now and will soon be gone. History will judge this nation by what happens next.
I think poetic justice would be for Trump's henchmen not just to be incarcerated, but incarcerated in CECOT.
every word. thanks for saying what we’re all thinking.
